A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
