The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
