The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
