Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such medications should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
