This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake right now.
